対手を斬る間合に入った瞬間には勝負がついている。すなわち時代劇の殺陣や竹刀剣道のような、斬る間合に入ってから対手の攻撃を受けたりなどして斬るということはまずあり得ない。

真剣での勝負において、刀が対手に届く間合に入った場合には、逆に対手の刀も当然にこちらに届く間合なのであり、対手の太刀筋ないし間合の見切りをほんの少しでも見誤れば、確実に自分の腕や顔面などに斬り付けられる。そうなれば刀を持つどころではない事態に陥ることとなる。

本来、日本刀という触るだけで斬れる優れた武器を互いに持つということは、こういう事態に一瞬にして陥ることを覚悟の上で使われた。したがって、その刀を持って対手を斬る間合に入るということは、対手に確実に隙を見出した、そのときのみであり、それ以外であってはならない
